Ranking NFL teams in the NFC heading into this upcoming season (16-11)

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Hello everybody and welcome to Harris’s Sports World. With the NFL season just around the corner (this post is late, but I wrote this before the season started) , here are my rankings of the teams in the NFC from 1-16 based on their roster/potential for the upcoming season. I will be spreading this out over 3 different posts - so stay tuned to read all the rankings.

#16 - THE ARIZONA CARDINALS - FACING AN UPHILL BATTLE

Starting off at number 16 are the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, the team is facing some challenges with the loss of Kyler Murray due to an ACL injury. Additionally, parting ways with DeAndre Hopkins has weakened their overall performance. When comparing them to the other teams in the NFC, including their own division, it becomes evident that they are facing an uphill battle. It would not come as a surprise to see the Cardinals selecting first overall in the next NFL Draft.

#15 - THE CAROLINA PANTHERS - REBUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Coming in at number 15 are the Carolina Panthers. The decision to trade their superstar running back, Christian McCaffrey, along with other significant moves during the recent NFL draft, indicates a commitment to rebuilding for the future. However, when examining their current roster, it becomes clear that they may struggle to make it to the playoffs this year. Even with the acquisition of their franchise quarterback, Bryce Young, the team lacks the necessary talent to pose a significant threat in the NFC.

#14 - THE LOS ANGELES RAMS - IN NEED OF A MORE WELL-ROUNDED ROSTER

Moving on to number 14, we have the Los Angeles Rams. It is true that they have two exceptional players in Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald, both of whom bring immense talent to the team. However, when evaluating the overall roster, it becomes clear that there may be limitations in their ability to make a significant impact in the NFC. While the Rams' offense has the potential to be decent, their defense heavily relies on the contributions of Aaron Donald. As outstanding as he is, one player alone cannot single-handedly carry an entire defense. If the Rams do not bolster their defensive positions by acquiring better players, the defense may continue to struggle. In order for the Rams to compete at a higher level in the NFC, it is crucial for them to address the gaps in their defense and build a more well-rounded roster. This will allow them to maximize their potential and become a formidable force in the conference.

#13- THE WASHINGTON COMMANDERS - PROMISING ELEMENTS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

Coming in at number 13 are the Washington Commanders. One significant issue I have noticed with this team is their quarterback situation. Will Sam Howell truly be a franchise quarterback for this organization? Can he guide them through the challenges of the competitive NFC East Conference? Personally, I have my doubts.

During the 2022-2023 season, we witnessed Howell's performance in a few remaining games, and he failed to demonstrate star qualities. Instead, he appeared to be an average quarterback capable of keeping the team afloat.

Unfortunately, given the caliber of teams in this conference, being just "average" won't suffice. I predict that Howell will encounter difficulties in his first full year with the Commanders, especially considering the team's offensive line, which may not provide him with adequate protection. While the Commanders do possess talented receivers, I don't envision them making significant strides under Howell's leadership. Additionally, although the team boasts a decent defense, it may not have the strength to overcome the challenges posed by the tough NFC.

While the Washington Commanders have some promising elements, such as a solid defense and talented receivers, the uncertainty surrounding their quarterback situation, particularly with Sam Howell at the helm, raises concerns about their ability to succeed in the highly competitive NFC East Conference.

#12 - THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - POST BRADY TEAM MAY STRUGGLE

Next up at number 12 are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While they may be in a weak division, they are currently facing a quarterback competition between former number 1 pick Baker Mayfield and former second-round pick Kyle Trask. This poses a challenge for a team that boasts a talented wide receiver core, a decent offensive line, and an even better defense. However, without a solid quarterback situation, it is doubtful that this team will succeed. The absence of Tom Brady, who was instrumental to the team's success, will be deeply felt. If the Buccaneers fail to address their quarterback room effectively, it is likely that they will struggle this year and may not secure a spot in the playoffs.

#11 THE GREEN BAY PACKERS - ONLY TIME MAY TELL

The Green Bay Packers have landed at number 11 in the rankings, which is a relatively low position for a team that has traditionally been considered a strong contender. However, the absence of Aaron Rodgers, who has played a pivotal role in their success, raises concerns about their performance this season. As for Jordan Love, his preseason appearances showed some promise, but there are still question marks surrounding his ability to lead the team effectively. Additionally, the Packers' offense faces challenges with new wide receivers and an offensive line that has had a history of injuries.

On the defensive side, the Packers boast a talented roster including standout players like Jaire Alexander, Kenny Clark, and Rashan Gary. Their defense is solid throughout and has the potential to make an impact in games.

However, despite their defensive star power, the Packers may struggle to score points against their opponents due to the offensive obstacles. Which could hinder their chances of making it to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. It is clear that the success of the team will heavily rely on how well they can overcome these offensive challenges.

While the Green Bay Packers have a formidable defense, their offense may face difficulties that could result in them missing the playoffs for back-to-back years. Only time will tell if they can overcome these hurdles and regain their status as strong contenders in the league.

Stay tuned for the next set of rankings...
