Ranking NFL teams in the NFC heading into this upcoming season (10-6)

Hello everybody and welcome to Harris’s Sports World. Today I will be continuing my NFC rankings from 10-6 based on their roster/potential for the upcoming season.

#10 CHICAGO BEARS - THE CONTROVERSY

At number 10, the Chicago Bears are positioned in a controversial spot. Some argue it's too high, while others believe it's too low. For those who think it's too high, I'd like to explain why the Bears are ranked above the Packers.

Firstly, the Bears made a significant addition to their roster in the form of top-tier wide receiver, Dj Moore. Moore's arrival undoubtedly strengthens the offensive weaponry available to quarterback, Justin Fields.

With Moore's presence, Fields now has more options when it comes to throwing the ball downfield.

Additionally, the Bears have made improvements to their offensive line. They selected Darnell Wright with the 10th overall pick in the draft, recognizing his immense potential to become a successful lineman in the league. Furthermore, they acquired Nate Davis, a reliable offensive lineman who fills a much-needed position on the team. These additions will provide Fields with the necessary protection he needs in the pocket and allow him ample time to make decisions.

Not only have the Bears focused on enhancing their offense, but they've also prioritized strengthening their defense. In the draft, they wisely picked Gervon Dexter and Tyrique Stevenson in the second round, bolstering their defensive depth. In addition, they drafted Zach Pickens in the third round, further fortifying their defensive line. These acquisitions will improve the overall performance of their defense.

Moreover, the Bears made key signings at the linebacker position. Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards bring their talent and expertise to the team, particularly in pass coverage. Their presence will elevate the Bears' defense and make them a more formidable unit against the run.

Considering the competitiveness of the division, the Bears have a real shot at winning it all. The situation is up for grabs, and it wouldn't come as a surprise if the Bears show significant improvement this season, surpassing their performance from last year. All in all, with the addition of impactful players, improvements to both offense and defense, and the potential for success, the Bears are poised for a much better season.

#9 - NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - FOCUSING ON THE RIGHT STUFF

At number 9, we have the New Orleans Saints. However, there are some concerns surrounding their decision to sign quarterback Derek Carr to a four-year deal. At 32 years old, there are doubts about whether Carr can maintain his level of play for the duration of the contract. While it's not impossible, keeping him for that long may prove to be a risky choice that could negatively impact the team in the future.

Shifting focus to their offense, the Saints possess a strong wide receiver corps with players like Chris Olave and Michael Thomas. If Thomas can stay healthy, there is optimism that he can regain his previous form. Additionally, rookie AT Perry shows promise as a potential third wide receiver option, especially as a deep-threat target. The offensive line also deserves praise, as it represents a significant improvement for Carr compared to his previous team, the Raiders.

Notably, the Saints' running back room is solid despite Alvin Kamara's three-game suspension. With Jamal Williams as a capable backup, Kamara's absence shouldn't disrupt the team too much. Once Kamara returns in Week 4, the offense will benefit from his versatility as both a runner and a pass-catching threat. Defenses will have to adjust accordingly, adding another dimension to the Saints' offense.

Defensively, the Saints boast key players such as Cameron Jordan and Demario Davis, who excel at stopping the run and providing consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Their secondary, featuring Marshon Lattimore, Tyrann Mathieu, and Marcus Maye, is also formidable.

These defensive backs have the skills necessary to shut down star wide receivers, effectively disrupting opposing offenses. Additionally, the Saints reinforced their defensive line by drafting Bryan Bresee in the first round, further strengthening their defense.

Overall, the Saints have the potential to be a very strong team, with all the necessary pieces to contend. However, their success will depend on their ability to stay healthy. Injuries can quickly derail a season, so it's crucial for the team to prioritize player well-being and take necessary precautions. So, while there are some concerns surrounding the long-term implications of Derek Carr's contract and the potential for injuries, the Saints have the potential to be a competitive force in the league. With solid offensive and defensive units, they possess the tools to make a deep playoff run.

#8 THE DETROIT LIONS - WILL WE BE SUPRISED?

The Detroit Lions hold the 8th spot in the rankings, and they have made significant moves to improve their position. One notable addition is David Montgomery, a talented running back acquired through free agency. Montgomery brings explosiveness to the team, benefiting from a superior offensive line compared to his previous team, the Bears. His addition strengthens the Lions' running back situation. Additionally, the Lions addressed their weak secondary from the previous year by making major upgrades. They acquired CJ Gardener-Johnson, a skilled disruptor in the passing game who will contribute to the team's ability to contest opposing players. Furthermore, the Lions bolstered their cornerback group by bringing in Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley, both of whom are capable role players. These additions will greatly improve the Lions' overall secondary performance.

Unfortunately, the Lions did not make any significant moves to strengthen their defensive line apart from selecting Brodric Martin in the late 3rd round during the draft. It remains doubtful that this addition will lead to substantial improvements in the defensive line, particularly in support of second-year player Aidan Hutchinson. This lack of action could prove to be a grave mistake for the team in the upcoming season. In a surprising move, the Lions used one of their first-round picks to draft Jahmyr Gibbs, despite having recently signed David Montgomery. This raises questions about whether Montgomery will serve as a backup, considering the amount invested in him. However, Gibbs brings versatility to the running back position, being both an exceptional runner and a reliable pass catcher. This two-dimensional skill set makes him a valuable asset to the team.

With their second first-round pick, the Lions chose linebacker Jack Campbell. While Campbell is considered a great player, some critics argue that drafting a linebacker early on was a reach. The team had to consider whether Campbell would still be available later in the draft, allowing them to address a different position of need. Only time will tell if this decision pays off for the Lions. During the second round, the Lions made two solid selections that will contribute to both their offense and defense. With their first second-round pick, they chose tight end Sam La Porta, who is expected to make an immediate impact as a starter. Their second second-round pick, Brian Branch, adds much-needed strength to the secondary.

The entire secondary unit now has the potential to make a significant impact in the relatively weaker NFC North. Considering the Lions' strong offensive line and a decent wide receiver core, they have a genuine chance to make an impact in the NFC. With the improvements made to their running back situation, secondary, and additional key draft picks, the Lions are poised to compete and surprise many in the upcoming season.

#7 THE ATLANTA FALCONS - POISED FOR SUCCESS

The Atlanta Falcons, currently ranked at the 7th spot, had several close games last season. Despite being in one of the worst divisions in the NFC, the Falcons displayed potential. With a second-year quarterback, Desmond Ridder, who has limited experience due to Marcus Mariota starting for most of the season, the team relies on him to lead the offense. Ridder, although young, has the opportunity to have a successful career with the guidance of the Falcons' quarterback mentorship program.

The offensive line of the Falcons is decent but not exceptional. Chris Lindstrom, a superstar guard, and Jake Matthews, a serviceable left tackle, will provide support for Ridder. However, there is still room for improvement.

The addition of Matthew Bergeron in the second round of the draft will aid Ridder's development as he learns from experienced offensive players. This valuable learning opportunity should accelerate his progress.

In terms of the running game, the Falcons surprised many by drafting Bijan Robinson with the eighth pick. Despite already having a promising second-year player like Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson, Robinson brings a unique skill set to the team. With outstanding athleticism and versatility in both running and pass catching, he provides Ridder with numerous options, reducing the reliance on solely throwing the ball.

The wide receiver room of the Falcons is reasonable, with Drake London showcasing promise during his rookie season. However, the standout player is Kyle Pitts, a big tight end who faced difficulties last year due to quarterback issues. Nevertheless, his talent is undeniable, which is why he was the 4th overall pick in the draft.

With Ridder at the helm, hopefully, Pitts will have more opportunities to shine in the upcoming season.

The Falcons' defensive line shows promise with solid players like Clasis Campbell and Grady Jarrett. Their presence can elevate the team's defense. Additionally, the acquisition of Zach Harrison in the 3rd round of the draft will strengthen their pass rush and run defense, as he learns from experienced mentors.

In free agency, the Falcons made significant moves to improve their secondary. Signing Jessie Bates III, a versatile safety who excels in both coverage and run defense at just 26 years old, will be a crucial addition. The team also added to their cornerback depth by bringing in Mike Hughes and trading for Jeff Okudah, a young player with immense potential. These acquisitions will greatly enhance Atlanta's defense, which struggled last season.

Although the Falcons have some weaknesses at the linebacker position, with young players like Troy Anderson, Arnold Ebiketie, and Kayden Elliss still developing, patience is required. However, overall, the Falcons' roster is constructed well, and they are poised for success in the NFC. With the right execution, this season holds great promise for the Atlanta Falcons.

#6 THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS - NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY

Ranked at number 6 are the Minnesota Vikings. While this may come as a surprise to many, this roster possesses great potential. Kirk Cousins, the team's quarterback, still has the ability to lead the offense effectively. The talent at the wide receiver position is outstanding, with a top-three receiver in the league, along with a serviceable receiver in K.J. Osborn. The Vikings also made a wise first-round draft choice in Jordan Addison, a shifty receiver with exceptional route-running skills, who, alongside Justin Jefferson, will form an unstoppable duo. Additionally, the team boasts a talented running back in Alexander Mattison, known for his speed and agility. Tight end T.J. Hockenson, who now has a full season in the Vikings' offensive system, will have increased opportunities to make an impact. This offensive firepower demonstrates the strength of the Vikings' roster.

Even the offensive line is solid and will provide ample protection for Kirk Cousins, allowing him to utilize his plethora of weapons effectively. However, the defensive line is a weak point for the team. Despite attempts to address this issue by signing Dean Lowry, it remains an area that needs improvement. On the positive side, the linebackers are decent, with Danielle Hunter consistently making a notable impact on the Vikings' defense. The presence of Jordan Hicks, a serviceable linebacker, and Marcus Davenport, a star linebacker capable of influencing pass plays, adds depth to the position.

Moving to the secondary, there are some concerns. The signing of Byron Murphy fills a significant gap at cornerback and adds youthful energy alongside Andrew Booth Jr. The safeties, led by the aging Harrison Smith, continue to be productive on the field. Additionally, second-year player Lewis Cine exhibits immense talent and has the potential to make significant contributions. As long as the defense can prevent opponents from scoring too many points, the Vikings will be a formidable team that should not be taken lightly this season. Their roster demonstrates why they are considered one of the top teams in the NFC.
